Bicycle Tour - 1 Week Out
The past few years I have been dreaming of taking a long distance multi month bicycle tour. I first came across this possibility while in college and have since read more and more stories on its possibility. Every time I came across someone loaded up I could not but think of the adventure and possibility of which they were embarking on. So, I made a decision three years ago that in five years I would set out on my own bicycle adventure. This time frame would allow me to get my current situation in control, research and purchase equipment, and save money.
First things first, I busted out my old mountain bike from when I was a kid (pictured above) and began to rack up miles. Figured there was no reason to buy a new bike if I didn't like it. Well, I loved riding it. I liked the open air, the slow pace of travel, the ability to stop whenever, and the wide grin that came across my face. I felt a much greater sense of connection while riding on the bicycle as opposed to flying by in an enclosed car. I also began to throw my camera in my backpack as I rode. In fact, a good deal of the photographs on my website never would have been captured if I hadn't been riding slowly on my bicycle.
So time has flown by since I made that decision. However, a question popped up last fall. Why wait another two years? More money was the only answer I could come up with. That was the only answer. Essentially, how much of a safety net was available in case I failed is the only reason I had for waiting another two years. With the realization that two years of my life are more valuable to me now than a larger safety net of money, I upped my leave date. I made a decision to go for the leap this year instead of waiting another two. I worked an additional job besides the photography this winter and spring, researched equipment, and trained as much as possible. It seems crazy and surreal but I leave in a week from this morning for this dream.

Past 100 Posts - Local Sanctuary
The past 100 posts were short writings from my first book, Local Sanctuary. Writing for a hundred consecutive days on the photographs was very mixed experience for me. Some photographs conjured up something a little more personal while others were actually quite difficult to write about, especially those that had a very similar photograph the day before or after. And if the work wasn't very abstract, was it necessary to even write about it? Regardless, I did.
And scheduling the writings was sometimes a challenge as well. Since last November I have been busy prepping for my next adventure (details to follow in my next post.) So, a typical writing day consisted of working another job from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm, getting home, racking up miles on my bicycle, researching equipment, researching more equipment, finally ordering equipment, and squeezing in a post, sleep. Repeat. There were many a nights that I had to blink a few times just to make sure I was clearly looking at the screen and not nodding off (so if a post doesn't seem fully comprehendible this is probably why.) Overall, it was a good project and lesson of determination, motivation, ambition, and planning and I did get a good rhythm about halfway through.
I hope you enjoyed the journey in Local Sanctuary as the images in the book went through a period of darkness, exploration, reflection, celebration, and to some degree, of understanding.

In Light
The conclusion work of Local Sanctuary had to be this piece. As the book starts out with a gray winter day, the end is one of light. This piece is of a lone autumnal leaf in the beginning of winter. Instead of being surrounded by snow, however, it is being lit up by the light coming through the trees. Look closely and you can actually see the rays of light pouring down from above.
Local Sanctuary is the 100th and final creation in Local Sanctuary.

Battered Leaf
In the east preserve near the pine trees, I found a few stragglers of fall leaves still clinging to their branch. I liked how this leaf above stood out against the massive vertical trunks in the blurred background as if it had withstood the forces of nature and was willing to continue to hold on no matter what is thrown at it.

Leaf and Needles
Pine needles caught on a little twig keep company to this lone leaf as it basks in the late afternoon light in the eastern part of the preserve. I love how the sharpness lines of the needles compliment the suspended delicate dry leaf.
Leaf and Needles is the 98th creation in Local Sanctuary.

Untitled
I'm often asked which of my works are my favorites. I often reply that I don't necessarily have favorites but I do have some that are little more personal for me. This is one of those works. The piece of above is what started my whole style and technique. First capture in 2004/2005, the piece was placid with calm grass and a lovely blue sky. Being the tinkerer that I am, I soon took my newly acquired editor and began to explore what could be done. A few hours and some new understandings later, I arrived at the piece above. Very stark and almost Wizard of Ozish. So, I hope you enjoy this piece that formed the main style for all of my works to follow. Click here to purchase your Untitled or find more of my works.
Untitled is the 96th creation in Local Sanctuary.
