Mackinaw

At the heart of the preserve that Local Sanctuary focuses on, flows the Mackinaw River. In the summer time, the river can be quite shallow and canoeing becomes portaging. However, with the rains and melting of snow in the winter, as on this particular day, the Mackinaw is often high and overflowing. The trees in the river on the right are actually situated on the other bank during most of the year. In Mackinaw, they are closer to the water's edge on the left of the photograph than they are to the bank of the flood plain (not visible in photograph.) I also love how the branches are covered with snow, even when they are close to the water's edge.

If you visit the Merwin Nature Preserve in McLean County, a common place to sit and overlook the Mackinaw River is from the bench in Refuge.
