Previous Post - Texas: Part II., The Alamo and New Shows

Originally posted May 19, 2009:

Coming east out of Canyon Country, I decided that I would try and cool down by the Riverfront in San Antonio, see the grounds of the mission of the Alamo. I had always heard stories of how physically small this piece of history is compared to the city that has blossomed around. Sure enough, I was astonished to see the crying Alamo next to the tourist traps and modern day San Antonio. However, the complex was not nearly as small as I had imagined. I had arrived to late to take a tour of the inside but I did walk the perimeter to get a feel of its size and battered history. It was larger than I had perceived, especially for an early 18th century structure. But it is still mind boggling to envision this little mission as the makeshift fortress of dedicated freedom fighter’s against the siege of Antonio López de Santa Anna Pérez de Lebrón. Although the fighters were defeated, their dedication to their cause inspired others to “Remember the Alamo” and eventually win their independence.

With this in mind, I have created the piece above, “Support”. Although the lamp is out and the walls are wounded by time, the structure still holds together and the life of the vines is still strong, much like the heart and will of those who have found courage in its walls.
